Understanding The Need Of Therapy for Sleep Disorders

Many children face difficulties falling asleep, however, if your child regularly experiences insomnia or sleep problems, seeking professional help is recommended. A pattern of disrupted sleep in your child could be a warning sign of a sleep disorder or sleep anxiety among many other problems.

A good night’s sleep is imperative for the mental health and development of your child. However, studies suggest that an increasing number of young children have sleep problems at some point in their childhood.

Lack of quality sleep can not only have physical effects but can also negatively impact your child’s performance in school. This, in turn, affects their concentration levels and engagement in extracurricular activities.

At The Youth Fairy, we understand how stressful it can be. As a parent or caregiver, it can be frustrating not knowing how to help. That is where we come in, offering your child the assistance they need to deal with sleep problems.

Our therapy services are designed to provide the knowledge, understanding and strategies to help improve sleep and overall feelings of well-being. Our Fairies offer a nurturing space where your child can better understand their fears and anxieties that lead to poor sleep. With a blend of empathy and a solution-focused approach, we help to restore peaceful nights to your child’s life.

Therapy for Sleep Disorders:
Understanding the Signs and Symptoms

In the years of childhood, sleep should be your child’s peaceful escape, a chance to rest and promote healthy development. Yet, for many children, sleep can become a source of anxiety and unrest.

Sleep anxiety in children can manifest in different ways, from sleep refusal, to repeated night terrors and frequently waking up in the middle of the night.

Some children might complain of physical symptoms like stomach aches or headaches near bedtime or show excessive worry about sleep itself, signalling their distress.

At The Youth Fairy, we understand the importance of recognising the symptoms of sleep anxiety early on. Here are some signs to look out for:

Problems with Bed Wetting

A common sign among younger children, bed wetting stems from improper bladder control at night. There could be a plethora of reasons for this such as insufficient development of your child’s bladder, constipation or a response to stress, illness or exhaustion. While it is normal to notice this in children between the ages of 2-4, if it continues beyond this age or causes further distress, it is recommended that you seek help.

Night Terrors/Nightmares

If you have noticed repeated episodes of screaming, shouting and thrashing in the bed with panic, your child might be suffering from night terrors. They usually occur when your child is not fully awake, which is why they fail to recall these events in the morning. Night terrors could stem from a lack of sleep, fear of the dark, stress or a change in sleeping environment.

Problems With Staying Asleep

Sleep anxiety in your child may show up in the form of failing to sleep or not being able to stay asleep for longer durations. This could range from fear of the dark room to being afraid of something bad happening to them or being hurt by monsters or other imaginary creatures. These signs often indicate the reluctance of your child to sleep.

Insomnia

Insomnia is characterised by your child’s inability to get to sleep at night and is common among younger children as well as adolescents. Non-restorative sleep can disrupt the normal functioning of your child, further adding to the distress.

These symptoms are often more than just a phase; they can be indicators of deeper anxieties needing gentle exploration and care.

At The Youth Fairy, we understand the importance of early identification and intervention. If your child is struggling with sleep disorders like insomnia, our experienced Fairies can help.

We will help your child understand their inner fears and develop the right coping strategies to deal with their sleep issues effectively. In our therapy sessions, we can help children with their sleep challenges whilst creating a safe and comforting space where children can gain a greater insight into the tools and strategies needed to get back in control and develop more mentally healthy behaviours.

Through listening and tailored therapeutic techniques, we work together to help ease their anxieties and find their way towards a peaceful night time sleep.
